Profile Overview
Prerender has earned its reputation as the go-to platform for serving billions of pages to web crawlers. Now, we’re evolving into something bigger: the layer that makes the web legible to machines—from search crawlers to emerging AI systems.
To achieve this, we’re seeking a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead a transformation of our engineering organization. The goal is to shift from infrastructure optimization to a high-velocity, product-focused team that delivers impactful features fast.
This is a hands-on building role, not a caretaker position. You will:
- Own the technology vision, engineering strategy, and R&D budget.
- Guide a small, senior engineering team (~7 engineers today) with no management layer between you and the team.
- Embed AI-first engineering practices, optimize infrastructure, and accelerate delivery efficiency.

Responsibilities
Technology Vision & Strategy
- Own Prerender’s technology vision, roadmap, and engineering strategy.
- Align engineering work with business objectives and customer value.
- Adopt AI-assisted development tools to multiply team productivity.
- Drive architecture and infrastructure decisions with a focus on total cost of ownership (TCO), including maintenance and opportunity costs.
- Run a multi-region Kubernetes-based render fleet efficiently, optimizing cost-per-render and reliability.
- Represent Prerender’s technical capabilities to customers, partners, and the market.
- Maintain high standards for software quality, performance, security, and reliability.
- Stay ahead of technological shifts and integrate relevant innovations.
Security & Compliance
- Own security and compliance programs, including SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.
- Oversee year-two observation periods, surveillance audits, and operational discipline.
- Ensure compliance programs are documented, transparent, and resilient.
Team Management & Growth
- Coach and mentor engineers to reach their full potential.
- Build a culture of ownership with clear expectations and growth opportunities.
- Promote diversity and inclusion within the engineering organization.
Execution & Delivery
- Lead continuous delivery improvement and remove team bottlenecks.
- Enhance DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring systems.
- Define and track key engineering metrics to optimize workflows.
- Manage change deliberately, involving team members and customers in transitions.
Executive Partnership & Stakeholder Management
- Partner with the CEO and leadership team on company strategy.
- Collaborate closely with Product to align capacity with customer needs.
- Translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
Ownership & Autonomy
- Own the R&D budget: personnel, infrastructure, tooling, and vendors.
- Maintain an infrastructure cost model with forecast and reporting.
- Make independent decisions aligned with company strategy.

What You Bring
- 10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years in senior leadership at a SaaS company.
- Strong infrastructure background with experience in large-scale distributed systems and production Kubernetes.
- Proven success embedding AI tooling into engineering workflows.
- Track record of improving and sustaining delivery speed.
- Experience owning security and compliance programs (SOC 2, ISO 27001).
- Business-oriented and hands-on, with direct contributions to engineering work.
- Experience with scalable web products, CI/CD, DevOps, and security principles.
- Excellent communication skills, async-first, with board-level comfort.
