Now, we’re looking for a highly strategic, AI-forward Fractional CTO to lead our engineering, infrastructure, and security initiatives. This is a unique opportunity to take on a dynamic, high-leverage technical leadership role in a fast-moving tech company, preparing our architecture for scale, integrating advanced AI coding workflows, and ensuring enterprise-grade reliability as we rapidly grow home and abroad.
As a key team member, you’ll act as the bridge between engineering and executive leadership, laying the technical foundation so our existing development team can focus on what we do best: building innovative, immersive learning tools that transform workforce training across the globe.
Role Description
You will own the high-level architecture across our cloud infrastructure (Azure) and application stack (.NET, Web, Unity). Rather than acting as a solo contributor, your mandate is to leverage AI to multiply the output of our team. You will proactively identify, implement, and optimise AI-assisted workflows while maintaining rigorous security standards, architectural integrity, and strategic alignment with business goals.
You will partner closely with our AEST-based Lead Developer (who specialises in Unity, UX, and product realisation), setting the architectural guardrails, API contracts, and CI/CD pipelines that allow them to build quickly and safely.
Core Duties
- AI Strategy & Engineering Leadership: Spearhead our AI integration strategy. Evaluate, deploy, and mandate the use of the latest AI coding environments (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) to maximise the engineering velocity and code quality of our development team.
- Security & Cloud Architecture: Maintain ultimate ownership of our Azure infrastructure and organisational security posture. Work with our vCISO and oversee the management of security compliance (ISO27001 / SOC 2), utilising automated compliance platforms to prepare the business for technical due diligence.
- AI Governance: Establish governance frameworks for the safe use of agentic tools, ensuring that AI-generated code is vetted for security vulnerabilities and that proprietary IP is protected when using third-party LLMs.
- Architectural Oversight & Code Quality: Deeply understand our existing codebase to conduct rigorous, high-level architectural reviews for Web, Unity, and .NET API projects, ensuring both AI-generated and human-written code meet strict enterprise standards.
- Incident Response & Reliability: Optimise our automated monitoring and alerting system for our Azure environment. Enhance automated protocols for live bug triage and incident response to ensure high availability for our growing international customer base, minimising the need for immediate, 24/7 human intervention while the Australian team is offline.
Must Haves
- An AI-First Mindset: A deeply forward-thinking attitude; you view AI not just as a tool, but as a fundamental shift in how scalable software is designed, built, and maintained.
- Proven AI Integration Experience: Demonstrated experience integrating agentic and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, advanced LLM workflows) into team workflows to measurably increase productivity.
- Proven track record in technical leadership, with the ability to mentor developers and scale engineering practices within a startup environment.
- Deep architectural expertise in Azure cloud infrastructure.
- Strong architectural familiarity with .NET and Web ecosystems (ability to read, understand, and guide the refactoring of existing complex codebases).
- Understand how to integrate Unity clients with a scalable .NET/Azure backend (APIs, statement management).
- Experience leading security and compliance initiatives, specifically preparing a company for ISO27001 or SOC 2 audits.
- Exceptional communication skills, capable of bridging the gap between technical teams and non-technical business leaders.

- Experience with continuous compliance automation platforms (e.g., Vanta).
- Familiarity with MongoDB Atlas.
