For our customer AIMA Technology we are looking for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) | Technical Co-Founder
The company
AIMA Technology is a pre-seed deep-tech startup developing photonic memory. The company is transitioning from fundamental research into system-level engineering and product development. Our current team combines strong expertise in material science, optical physics, and experimental testing. We have deep hands-on experience in developing and validating novel optical concepts and characterizing their performance.
AIMA Technology exists precisely at the inflection point: early enough to define the architecture, late enough that the physics is real.
For a technical founder, this is the rare moment where fundamental science can still become foundational infrastructure.
The ambition is clear:
to enable a new class of memory technologies that fundamentally improve speed, energy efficiency, and scalability for AI-driven computing systems. The team is intentionally small, highly technical, and focused on building something that lasts.
What will you do
This is a true co-founder role, not a late-stage CTO position.
You will own the technical execution of the company to achieve manufacturable reliable hardware and help shape AIMA’s long-term technology, IP, and product strategy.
You will work directly with also technical Founder & CEO and play a central role in strategic decisions involving investors, partners, and future hires.
- Architect photonic memory chips
- Translate physics into scalable device designs
- Lead fabrication and prototyping efforts (e.g. Electron Beam Lithography, deposition, iteration cycles)
- Integrate photonics with electronics, packaging, thermal and mechanical constraints
- Define interfaces, validation methods, and performance benchmarks
- Make trade-offs between scientific elegance and engineering realism
- Lead and mentor a small, elite technical team
- Engage with external fabrication partners and research institutions
Year 1 focus and deliverables:
Validated assumptions, reproducible results, and a first working prototype or fabrication iteration that clearly demonstrates feasibility and performance potential.
What will you bring
- You hold a PhD in photonics, applied physics, materials science, or a closely related field, or have equivalent deep industrial R&D experience
- Have hands-on experience with photonic device design, fabrication, and characterization
- Are comfortable operating at the intersection of fundamental physics and real-world engineering
- Enjoy building things from first principles, under constraints, with incomplete information
- Are motivated by long-term impact, ownership, and scientific integrity, not short-term optimization
- Are seriously considering a deep-tech founder path
- Want your technical decisions to define a company, not just a project
This is a builder’s role in a pre-seed deep-tech environment. It requires patience, rigor, resilience, and a genuine desire to make an impact.
Further requirements
Due to the nature of the technology and its application domain, this position requires candidates who:
- Are based in the Netherlands or willing to relocate
- Are fluent in English; Dutch language skills are a strong plus
- Already have the legal right to work in the Netherlands / EU
